Praise God! Monday's appointment confirmed that Luke's MRI and CT scan were normal. We will be going ahead with bilateral cochlear implant surgery at Brenner's Children's Hospital on September 18th. This surgery gives Luke his only chance to be able to hear and learn how to speak. Surgery rates are very high in children under the age of 5 years old.
Yesterday, Luke had his ophthamology exam. Everything was normal and he doesn't need to be seen for 2-3 years. He also received his loaner hearing aids and is doing well with them. He doesn't like me putting them in or taking them out. But, overall, I would say he has been very compliant with them. He has only tried to pull them out once over the last 2 days. It seems as though he is hearing some loud sounds with his hearing aids, such as the vacuum cleaner running, the microwave, and the van door opening and closing.
Tomorrow Luke goes for his PT evaluation.
We have decided to take the plunge and home school the girls this year. I ordered my curriculum yesterday...

Good luck! I know that the after care for CI appointments can be very time consuming. I hope you have a wonderful support network behind you! I think that is the key to facing all the special needs challenges, behaviors, appointments, and therapies.
ReplyDeleteHomeschooling is such a mixed bag, isn't it? So many choices and ideas, so many people using different material for different reasons. It can be overwhelming, but for us it was all very much worth it. We are homeschooling 2 this year and 2 are going into town for a specialized program and we have one more at home that is not school age yet.
Best wishes, all the way around!
